LNY Offers Mini-Grants to Volunteer Adult Literacy Programs Looking For Quality Tutor Training
by Literacy New YorkThanks to supporters who helped create the “Janice Cuddahee Fund,” Literacy New York (LNY) is pleased to announce that grants are available to help community-based literacy groups purchase LNY’s online Intake to Outcomes (I2O) Tutor Training. I2O offers literacy organizations the ability to provide tutor training “on demand” and potential volunteers can complete the workshops on their own schedules.
According to Kathy Houghton, LNY’s Executive Director, “Janice passed away in 2019 and the Janice Cuddahee Fund honors her 38 years of service to Literacy New York and her adult education passion. She believed strongly in the role of professionally-trained tutors and the effective use of technology.”
The Fund received a $25,000 lead gift from Elizabeth S. and Carl H. Pforzheimer III. “Betty and Carl have been long-time supporters of LNY,” said Houghton, “and Betty chaired Literacy NY’s Board of Directors in the 1990s and was a good friend of Janice’s. We are so honored that they helped us launch the Fund and continue to share ideas that will help it grow.”
Other donors, including the first monthly donor, are helping the Janice Cuddahee Fund reach its ambitious 2020 goal of $55,000. Income from the Fund can now provide grants to fund 54 Intake to Outcomes Tutor Training workshops. The mini-grants are intended to help small programs with limited training budgets access high quality workshops. The training offers evidence-based, current information and strategies around serving adult Basic Literacy and English Language learners, including Math instruction.
