This week is Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. Our colleagues at the National Coalition for Literacy (NCL) have compiled some facts and figures, along with some stories about adult learners, that underscore the importance of supporting adult education.

A few points of interest:

• Nearly 30% of adults with household incomes at or below the poverty line do not have high school credentials.
• Children whose parents have low literacy levels have a 72% chance of being at the lowest reading level (compared to 25% of children in the lowest reading level overall).
• Individuals with high school credentials earn about $10,000 more annually than those without
